FILIPINO AMERICAN DEMOCRATS CONGRATULATE JUSTICE DORIS LING-COHAN ON HER NOMINATION TO BE RE-ELECTED TO THE NEW YORK STATE SUPREME COURT

HARLEM, NEW YORK – Tonight, Judicial Delegates, District Leaders and Elected Officials from the New York County Democratic Party unanimously voted to re-elect Justice Doris Ling-Cohan to appear under the Democratic Party ballot line for the New York State Supreme Court for the General Election on November 8. The successful re-nomination of the embattled incumbent judge at the convention in Harlem Hospital comes after weeks of advocacy and education of party leaders and delegates on Justice Ling-Cohan’s behalf, particularly the Asian American and LGBT community, including the Filipino American Democratic Club of New York (FADCNY).

“This is a historic moment for the Asian American community’s representation in our courts, and for the LGBT community for which Justice Doris Ling-Cohan is a champion and a pioneer because of her ruling on same-sex marriage,” said Aries Dela Cruz, FADCNY president. “It is also an important moment because of the way her candidacy has catalyzed and galvanized the Asian American and LGBT community to work together, and to become even more involved in the Democratic Party in New York City.”

“While the Filipino American Democratic Club of New York is a new political club, we are proud to have played even a small role in ensuring that Justice Ling-Cohan was re-nominated this evening by the New York Judicial Delegate Convention to be the Democratic nominee for the New York State Supreme Court through our advocacy and lobbying for her candidacy.”

These efforts included lobbying Judicial Delegates, and an awards acceptance speech by Aries Dela Cruz at the West Harlem Democratic Club Awards Dinner on September 10 in front of many Judicial Delegates, party officials, and judges including Justice Doris Ling-Cohan. During the speech, Dela Cruz requested that the gathered leaders and officials keep the Asian American community in mind during the Judicial Convention.

The Filipino American Democratic Club of New York encourages Filipino American lawyers interested in the judicial nomination process to join FADCNY.
